The Green Studio vol 01 – Architecture in the comic books | DIA – Studio WS15-16

Academic research developed at DIA
Directed by Karim Soliman

This is not another green studio dealing with sustainability in architecture -taking into consideration that everything that we built nowadays, due to a global consciousness and to laws made by institutions like UNFCCC, should be from scratch thought in a sustainable way. This is THE Green Studio.

We will be realizing the utopias and distopias from our favorite Sci-fi novels or our favorite super hero comic books! In other words we will design the build environment that replaces the green Chroma in the post-production of the movies.

Several of these novels and comic books have been realized to great moving pictures where all the magic happens in the post-production!On the other hand, we as architects should use the latest techniques, tools and methods we have to take part, together with scientist, in shaping the future cities in sci-fi movies.

Have you ever took a deep look in these movies, to read between the line how they render us the future of our cities, Gotham city in Batman series, New york city in The Fifth Element, mega city in The Matrix trilogy, Pandora planet in Avatar, Galactic city in Star Wars or London in Sherlock Holmes series; and ask yourself why and how they look the way you see them in the movies!

Our focus this semester is to adopt a sci-fi novel or a super hero from the comics, analyze the utopia or distopia in the novel and use it as a guideline for our vision of build environment.

In the Green Studio, we will work intensively in groups, using the computational tools and advanced modeling software such as Rhino- GH, T-spline and Processing is compulsory, previous knowledge of these tools is highly appreciated.

We will go to Liverpool in our excursion to visit CAVA (Center of Architecture and Visual Arts) at the school of Architecture in Liverpool University.

If you are highly motivated and ready to spend this semester living in the studio, having fun learning new things you are welcome to join us. Get ready to get out of your comfort zone and unleash the super hero inside you!
